Chris Schuler Vogt (Medium: Felt Art, Fiber Art, Jewelry, Mixed Media, and Weaving)
As a child I fell in love with weaving after seeing a beautiful tapestry being formed on a loom. But it wasn’t until my early 20’s that I was finally able to learn to spin wool and and pick up a shuttle to weave my own art, using wool from the family sheep ranch. After dabbling in other forms of fiber art and making jewelry, I recently discovered painting, using the vibrant free-flowing colors of Alcohol Ink. I hope my art will brighten your walls as they do in my family’s home, studio and gallery.

As a Watercolor artist working in "Bold Color Vibrancy” style, please allow me the opportunity to share my background and explain my inspiration for creating each of my “Paintings of Historical Significance”.
Having lived in the Sierra Foothills region in California all my life, I have developed an intimate connection with the scenic country landscape and the rich historic community where gold was discovered. My deep passion is to visually preserve for others the emotion and excitement during the mid-1800 to mid-1900 time period.
I was born in 1950 at the historic Jones Hospital, located in Grass Valley, a town which rooted during the California Gold Rush era. I grew up on a 240-acre cattle ranch near Rough & Ready and Timbuktu. My father, in addition to ranching and logging, worked underground at the Empire Mine in Grass Valley. I attended the one-room Pleasant Valley School, which had only 15 students, grades 1st-8th taught by one teacher. My brothers and I milked cows, cut wood and bailed hay that we stacked to the roofpeak of our 100-year-old barn. In summers we cooled off gold panning and swimming in the Yuba River under the Bridgeport Covered Bridge.
At age 9, I discovered an interest for drawing historical buildings and landmarks located in the old mining towns near our ranch, and that passion continues to grow. In 1965 I was a founding member of the Pioneer Arts in Nevada City, and I am currently a member of the Placer Artists League, the Meadow Vista Artists Association, and the Sierra Vista Artists of Colfax.
